We make all of our woven items from old clothing and materials donated by the Fairbanks community.
Alaska Rag Co. Clothing Rack

Clothing Rack
We have two donation bins in the Fairbanks area: one in the Fred Meyer West parking lot on Airport Way, and the other downtown in the Sadler's parking lot on Cushman Street and 5th Avenue.

We sort through this material and send most of the good, reusable clothing to a local thrift store. Some of these items make it to a rack in our store where we sell great outerwear at very affordable prices.

Cutting the cloth

Cutting the cloth
We also sort for items we will cut up for rags and items we will use in rugs. The items that we use in rugs are laundered and dried at hot temperatures to ensure clean woven items that won't shrink or color bleed for the customer.

We cut off all of the seams, pockets, zippers and buttons so that we have a plain piece of material.

Weaving

Weaving
We cut these pieces of materials into strips with a rotary strip cutter, a single strip at a time.

We bundle up the strips and put them in tubs with materials of similar color and texture.

We put the colors together for a rug and weave them into our woven items.
